The stories keep coming in from across the country — people are trying my recipes and really enjoying them!
Thanks for your support and keep spreading the word!
To give back to the community a little bit, I’m giving away 2 copies of Dollars to Donuts.
Let me know what you’re packing in your kid’s school lunch boxes. My son Paul reminded me that he could use the microwave to heat stuff up, so I’m on the lookout for some fresh ideas. Help!

I finally made the 2 chickens and followed the recipes in the book and had meals for a few days. I even was able to get some lunches for my daughter made and it saved me a lot of time and these days that is a necessity, especially for working moms. I bought the book but if I win one I will most certainly give it as a gift to a friend as I am sure there are many people who would benefit from the tips and provide their families with better meals.
We mostly pack sandwiches in my daughters lunch, but I am looking forward to reading this book for some fresh ideas – my daughter will appreciate it too!
My daughter’s in kindergarten and in the charming “I don’t like anything” phase. I usually pack a peanut butter and nutella on whole wheat with an apple or tangerine. I can’t wait for her to expand her food repertoire!
I no longer have school kids at home, but soup was always a big hit for lunch. I use to have to put it in a thermos, but if he has access to a microwave a spillproof container and a heatable bowl would work. Or maybe he’d like a sandwich where he could heat up leftover roast beef or chicken and eat it on a french roll…
I don’t have kids, but my younger brother is 16 and lives at home with my parents. My mom usually makes him sandwiches with whatever is there. He likes cheese, turkey, ham, brie cheese, salami, and even butter on the bread (yikes!). Sometimes I think my mom will add some lettuce. He likes baguette bread so she keeps several in the freezer and will prepare it on frozen bread and it will be thawed out by lunch. Alongside this I think he usually takes chips, pudding cups, jellos, or other snack items.
I’d love to get this book and give it to my family because I really want them to eat healthier food and be more efficient with their money and what they make. The NEVER eat leftovers, I can’t understand it, but they refuse, so the food will sit there in the fridge until I get fed up and clean out everything. They eat out a lot, resulting in more leftovers that they don’t eat, and waste a lot of money this way. My mom is a good cook but is also just not good at getting creative with what they have in the pantry or fridge and turns to a lot of convenience foods or take out since she’s so busy all the time.
I’ve tried teaching her some things and how to create good healthy meals in 20 minutes and use up pantry staples but I’m just not sure the interest or desire to learn is there, or she’ll seem interested but then get busy and never implement the things I tell her and reverts back to take out.
She needs the help! and from what I’ve read, all of your tips are fantastic!
The kids beg for those pricey lunch packs! We send those for special “treats” (yuck!) But, we usually send leftovers.
this would be a great book to have on hand for the food pantry

Hi Some Lucky Dog,

I don’t make the lunches as much as my wife does, but she did hit on an idea to make pita pizzas that keep really well in the lunchbox. She heats up a halved pita, flips it over, tops it with sauce and cheese, and heats the bottom some more to melt the cheese. Takes ~ 5 minutes altogether to make. She then wraps it in foil and packs it in the lunchbox. My kid really likes it.
We’ve also done chicken fried rice, mac & cheese w/ extras (veggies, hot dogs, etc). We try to be a little creative, but sometimes just a simple PBJ cut into shapes works as well.
No microwave available at the school for this student so we put it all in the sack.
Thanks Peter. We ended the contest on Jan 31st. Just haven’t gotten around to changing the blog. Sorry for the confusion.
Sorry for the confusion but the contest ended on Jan. 31st. Just can’t figure out how to remove the giveaway. I wouldn’t mind being your kid. Those are great lunches! Thank you for letting me know.
